Reunion Activities

CANOEING

We are looking at doing a float down the Des Moines River, putting in just above where the Boone River joins the Des Moines River, below the hill that holds the Vegors’ Cemetery. Depending upon where we get out, the float will be either 7.2 miles or 10.5 miles. There seems to be plenty of canoes available between all of us local family members, so there is no fee to rent one. If you have a kayak and would like to bring that, please feel free to do so!  We need to get a head count as to how many would like to go, so please email me at vegors@ rocketmail.com and let me know.  At this point, we are planning for the float to occur in the afternoon after lunch is served at the camp at noon.

FAMILY ROOTS

During this year’s annual Vegors’ Reunion, Paul Juhl will be giving a tour of some of the places that were near and dear to the hearts of the initial family settlers.  Paul was raised in this area, just a mile from the line that separates Webster and Hamilton Counties. Luckily, he was able to listen carefully when the ancestors talked and reminisced and knows some of the details of their lives.

Conrad Henry Vegors, after returning from the California Gold Rush, married Ellen Corbin and settled his new family on a bluff overlooking the junction of the Des Moines and Boone Rivers. Our tour will start at this place and then continue to the historic Vegors’ Cemetery, the farms of the next generation, the ghost town of Homer, and other local, history filled, areas.

There will be numerous activities for all ages at the reunion. For those in the family who love history, however, this is a chance to join Paul in traveling the gravel roads through the Iowa hills and valleys and hear some of the stories that have been passed down through the generations.  Do join us in the search for our Vegors’ heritage!

**We need to get a head count for how many want to go on this tour so that we have plenty of transportation for everyone. Please email me at vegors@rocketmail.com if you would like to go on this tour. There will be a bit of walking on uneven ground, so please wear good walking shoes or boots. We don’t want anyone twisting an ankle! We are tentatively planning on this occurring in the morning after breakfast, which is served at 8:00 a.m.

GOLF

For you golf enthusiasts out there, here is a website to go to  to look over the Don William Golf Course that is just down the road from Hidden Acres.

If enough of you let me know that you are interested in playing some golf at Don Williams, I will set a up tee times for all of you. Please email me at vegors@rocketmail.com to let me know how many will be coming. We have breakfast at 8:00 at the camp, so any time after that I can set up a tee time. Just let me know.

MUSIC

We have are very blessed to have some wonderful musicians in our family and they have agreed to share their talents with us! Carey Dubbert will be playing his auto harp and Josh and Lisa Vegors will adding their voices to the mix. I haven’t heard if Josh is bringing his guitar, but I am hoping he will! For the rest of you who are musically inclined, I encourage you to bring your instrument of choice. Who knows, we may be adding a Talent Contest to this list of activities if I find someone who wants to arrange it! ( Hint, hint!)
